What is burrow and why the hype?
Burrow, a project proposed by engineers at Monax and Intel, was approved by the Hyperledger Technical Steering Committee (TSC) and is currently under development. Burrow is an Ethereum-derived codebase inspired by a technology called eris-db developed and open sourced by Monax in 2014. The project was proposed by Intel and Monax to offer a smart contract-based platform for commercial companies and organizations to utilize.
“It provides a modular blockchain client with a permission led smart contract interpreter built in part to the specification of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM),” according to Monax CEO Casey Kuhlman.
“The blockchain community still has many technical challenges to solve, and many different possible approaches to solving them. ‘Permissioned’ and ‘unpermissioned’ (networks) represent two ends of a range of options for configuring a distributed ledger, not a binary choice.” —Brian Behlendorf, the Hyperledger Project
This also marks the start of a productive relationship with the broader Ethereum community, including the Ethereum Enterprise Alliance, as we monitor the specifications developed there for their application towards Burrow.
With everybody exploring private blockchain, the transparency is itself fading away, is this is the future of blockchain.
